Tickets are available from 10:00am on the day of the session, and will be on a first-come first-served basis.    Before booking, please read the club COVID instructions on the main website: https://oxfordfencingclub.co.uk/2020/08/31/club-session-information-2/ and ensure that you're familiar with the current risk assessment https://oxfordfencingclub.co.uk/2020/08/17/covid-risk-assessment/ The information that you provide when you book is critical to ensuring that we all remain safe, so please ensure that it's accurate and honest.  Club Equipment We have a limited amount of club equipment, and will be allocating it to members who need to borrow it and the beginners course. If you need to use club equipment, there are some extra things to know. Second, you must know what size equipment you need (either by remembering what you wore before lockdown, or by measuring yourself). You will be able to try on only two items of each piece of club kit and then use one of them for the remainder of the evening. This might mean that you're not happy with your particular choice of kit but it is the only way that we can ensure that everyone gets a fair chance of finding something that fits. Once you've selected club equipment, a committee member will record the serial numbers of the various pieces that you have and you will then be responsible for them. We will provide a numbered kit bag (or you can use your own bag) to allow you to take the kit home and bring it back (washed) the next time you attend a club session.

Autumn Beginners Course
Rye St. Antony, Franklin Road, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7SA
08-10-2021 19:30 – 26-11-2021 21:15
Learn to Fence Our courses for beginners (minimum age 8) are led by James Kingston, a qualified British Fencing Association coach registered with England Fencing. The course lasts for 8 weeks and takes place in the new sports centre of Rye St Antony School: see location.  An attendee at one of our recent courses commented "We were all instantly welcomed, and each leasson became the highlight of my week, and great value for money ... It was a great introduction to the sport, and I managed to make a lot more progress than I initially predicted, and will definitely be continuing."   COVID Safety As part of our COVID safety protocols, we must restrict the number of people present in the sports hall. This means that all attendees at a session including parents/guardians must book a place. For this reason, we request that younger fencers bring only one adult with them to a session so that there is sufficient space for everyone else. We will contact you before the course starts to confirm whether this will apply to you.   Fencing courses for Beginners  When a beginners' course is complete you should be able to compete in a proper fencing bout with your fellow beginners. The weapon used in the beginner’s course is a foil and you can go on to fence with the other weapons; epee and sabre if you decide to continue with the sport.  Please note that full payment is required before your place can be confirmed. The cost is £110 and includes use of all equipment.  Please register online, or email beginnersofc@yahoo.com for alternatives.  Course Dates The course will run on Friday evenings for 8 weeks. The dates for Autumn 2021 are: Friday, 8 October 2021 Friday, 15 October 2021 Friday, 22 October 2021 Friday, 29 October 2021 Friday, 5 November 2021 Friday, 12 November 2021 Friday, 19 November 2021 Friday, 26 November 2021 Friday, 3 December 2021 (Pro/Am Competition) Aims and objectives  of the fencing course for beginners  Aims:  At the end of the course the participants will be able to practice the conventions of a match in simulated bouts with other course members.  They will know sufficient fencing terminology to take individual lessons from a coach and understand help from other experienced fencers within the club.  Objectives:   To be able to adopt the correct 'en garde' position.  To be able to coordinate foot and hand actions to execute a simple attack or a defensive retreat.  To appreciate the idea of 'fencing distance' and be able to maintain it.  To be able to take the 'high line guards' in order to execute a simple parry.  To be able to execute a simple direct riposte following a parry.  To be able to continue a 'simple attack', avoiding the simple parry by the use of disengagement’.  To understand and be able to state the basic rule of 'right of way' for simple attacks and ripostes at foil.  To have experienced supervised bouts with other course members.  To understand the area of the target at foil, piste layout, basic fencing rules and etiquette.  To be familiar with basic piste rules, and the role and powers of the referee.  To have gained experience of simple judging of non-electric bouts.  To have received an introduction to the world of fencing, club, competitions, the various age groups, the various weapons.   To understand that this basic course is an introduction to the world of fencing that can lead,  with more experience and practice, to trying other weapons and fencing with more experienced members of the  club   Registration and payment for the course must be made in advance via this website, or bank transfer (contact us to arrange payment by this method); unfortunately it is not possible to join at the first class of a course.  What happens after the course?  If you enjoy the course and you want to continue with the sport, you are welcome to come to the club regularly. We run follow-on courses to teach you further skills, our club coaches are available for individual lessons, and free-fencing is available twice a week. Please visit our membership & fees page for full details of what that entails. Please note that you will need to be a member of British Fencing to fence at OFC (or any fencing club) once you complete a beginner’s course. Return to fencing! Club sessions have restarted. This is a Friday session and club equipment will be available for use.    Things you'll need to bring: Face mask for use whilst in the hall (including during fencing) Hand sanitiser Your own water bottle - the water fountain is out of use.  Things to remember: It's hard work fencing with a face mask fitted, so take plenty of breaks and don't go too hard. Fleching and close-quarters fencing is forbidden The changing rooms shouldn't be used so you should come in your breeches, or be able to change into kit in the hall. Before the Session: Everyone who will be entering the school site MUST have a ticket, even if you are not going to be taking part in the session. We will have to turn away anyone who has not booked a place. For this reason, you MUST book a volunteer ticket AND remain on site with any juniors who you are responsible for. Club Equipment We have a limited amount of club equipment, and will be allocating it to members who need to borrow it. If you need to use club equipment, there are some extra things to know. First, you must indicate that you need club kit when you choose a ticket for the session.
